We’ve had some good conversations recently with partners and community members about what the Maccabeus Foundation actually does when it comes to Ibogaine, Psilocybin, and cannabis-based therapies — and we want to be clear and upfront about it.

We do not currently offer, administer, or sell these therapies

The Maccabeus Foundation does not provide, administer, or sell Ibogaine, Psilocybin, cannabis, or any other controlled psychoactive substance to clients in Zambia. These substances are not yet approved for therapeutic use under Zambian law, and no client of the Foundation receives them from us today.

What we are doing right now

Our current work has two parts. First, advocacy and sensitisation — helping the public and policymakers understand the documented mental health and addiction benefits of these therapies when delivered safely and legally elsewhere in the world. Second, building the legal, regulatory and clinical foundation Zambia would need to offer them responsibly — engaging with the Ministry of Health and other regulators, and training Zambian clinicians through exchange visits to legally regulated programmes in countries such as Mexico and South Africa.

What happens once approval is granted

If and when Zambian regulatory authorities approve these therapies for medical use, the Foundation’s plan is to deliver them in-house, under strict medical supervision — never sold, and never given to a client to take independently. Every step would follow full legal compliance and international best practice.

In the meantime: referral partnerships

For people seeking these therapies now, we are building relationships with legally licensed international centres — including regulated clinics in Mexico and South Africa — so that we can help connect and refer clients to care that already operates within the law, rather than attempt to provide it ourselves before Zambia’s regulatory framework is in place.
